About This Training (Description, Materials Needed, Assessment, Evaluations)

EYE MOVEMENT DESENSITIZATION AND REPROCESSING (EMDR) TRAINING

Overview of EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured, evidence-based psychotherapy that has been extensively researched and proven to help individuals recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences. EMDR encourages patients to briefly focus on traumatic memories while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation—typically through eye movements. This process is associated with a significant reduction in the vividness and emotional intensity of trauma memories, facilitating recovery from PTSD and other related symptoms.

EMDR therapy is supported by a robust body of research showing its effectiveness not only for trauma and PTSD but also for conditions such as anxiety, depression, OCD, chronic pain, and addictions. Studies have even demonstrated that EMDR therapy can be more effective than pharmacological treatments like Prozac for trauma recovery (Van der Kolk et al., 2007). Since its inception, EMDR has transformed the lives of over 7 million individuals, thanks to the dedication of 110,000 therapists across 130 countries (Shapiro & Forrest, 2016).

EMDR therapy is recognized as an effective treatment by leading organizations such as the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the U.K. National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs/Department of Defense, The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and the World Health Organization, among others.

For more detailed information on EMDR treatment guidelines, please visit our EMDR Treatment Guidelines page.

Learner Assessment

As part of the EMDR training, you will be required to complete a "learner assessment." While there is no specific passing grade, it is crucial to answer each question to the best of your ability. This assessment is designed to enhance your understanding of key concepts and identify areas where additional support may be needed.

Should you have any questions or require further clarification regarding the learner assessment, please feel free to reach out.

EMDRIA Training Survey

Your feedback is valuable to us. You are invited to participate in EMDRIA's survey regarding your training experience. This survey provides an opportunity to offer direct feedback to EMDRIA about your experience in the EMDR Basic Training. Access the survey here: EMDRIA Training Survey.

Basic Training Evaluations

Upon completing the instructional portion of this training, you will be asked to complete an evaluation of your experience. This evaluation will cover aspects such as the quality of instruction, the knowledge and expertise of the trainers, the effectiveness of the assisting faculty, the usefulness of the training, and the fulfillment of educational objectives. Your feedback is instrumental in refining and enhancing the training experience for future participants.
