attachment-informed EMDR: Core Concepts and Session Structure

About this event

*Attend this training on its own or as part of the two-part series.

You are trained in EMDR. You know the protocol.

And still, when attachment wounds and developmental trauma are associated with persistent nervous system dysregulation, EMDR can feel slower and less predictable.

Targets are less clear. Activation can become overly cognitive or exceed the client’s window of tolerance. Sessions can lose structure or end without a clear sense of completion, even when you are careful and aligned with the model.

This two day training is designed for that clinical territory.
It offers a clear, structured way to work with attachment-related and developmental presentations using EMDR, while keeping attachment and nervous system regulation in view throughout the session.

What this training gives you
Over two days, you will learn how to organize your thinking, your preparation, and your in-session decisions so the EMDR protocol can do its job more reliably.

You will leave with more clarity about...
✔️ what is organizing the client’s current presentation
✔️ how to resource first so the system has enough support for processing
✔️ how to bridge from present day triggers to meaningful developmental targets
✔️ how to activate without flooding or going overly cognitive
✔️ how to support repair when processing stalls
✔️ how to end sessions with containment and present orientation

How the training is taught
Teaching is clear and focused.

Mark teaches through instruction, live demonstration, and structured practice. He explains his clinical reasoning as he works, so you can see how decisions are made moment by moment.

As Gabor Maté says, “Trauma is not what happens to you, but what happens inside you as a result of what happens to you.” ai-EMDR helps us work with what the nervous system learned to do to survive, whether the presenting issue feels big or small.

Who this training is for
This training is for EMDR-trained clinicians who work with attachment-related distress, developmental trauma, and chronic patterns of dysregulation, and who want sessions to feel more contained, coherent, and complete.

If you want more clarity in case conceptualisation, more confidence choosing targets, and cleaner decision making during processing, this training will support that.

Register now. Space is limited due to the in-person format.

  • Mark Brayne
Mark Brayne is an EMDR trainer and clinician based in the UK, recognised for his development and teaching of attachment-informed EMDR. Earlier in his career, he worked as a senior BBC foreign correspondent, covering Russia, East and Central Europe, and China. He brings many years of experience working with complex trauma, attachment injury, and developmental presentations, and is widely respected for the clarity and depth he brings to this work. Mark’s teaching integrates EMDR, attachment theory, and nervous system awareness, with a strong emphasis on case conceptualisation, clinical decision-making, and session structure. He is known for helping clinicians identify the underlying patterns that organise symptoms, and for translating complex material into practical steps therapists can use immediately. His presentations are dynamic and engaging, and his trainings are intentionally experiential. Mark typically demonstrates the approach live, explains his clinical reasoning as he works, and then guides participants into supported practice so the learning becomes embodied rather than only conceptual. Mark also uses metaphor as a teaching tool in a way that clinicians tend to remember. One he often returns to is the DeLorean, describing the EMDR protocol as a vehicle for revisiting the past with intention, preparation, and a clear route back to the present. For him, this reflects a core principle of the work: we do not revisit early experiences randomly or without support, and we always return to the here and now with containment and completion. Across his trainings, Mark combines clear instruction, live demonstrations, and structured practice, helping clinicians understand not only what to do, but why. His teaching is valued for being grounded, respectful of the EMDR model, and immediately applicable in clinical practice.

Event Learning Objectives

  • Describe the core principles of attachment-informed EMDR and explain how attachment and nervous system regulation inform clinical decision-making across an EMDR session.
  • Analyze client presentations using attachment-informed case conceptualisation by identifying developmental adaptations related to affect regulation, self-soothing, relational safety, and symptom presentation.
  • Identify present-day triggers, pervasive emotions, and future fears and select appropriate bridge points linking current distress to formative attachment-related targets.
  • Design and demonstrate resourcing strategies that incorporate nurturing, protective, and wise figures to support stabilization and readiness for EMDR processing.
  • Apply an attachment-informed approach to activation that prioritizes image, emotion, and body sensation while monitoring observable indicators of arousal and regulation.
  • Select and utilize attachment-focused imaginal and relational interweaves when spontaneous processing is insufficient to support repair and integration.
  • Design an attachment-informed EMDR session with a clear beginning, coherent processing middle, and intentional ending that supports containment and present orientation.
